FAQs
What editing services do you offer for authors?
I provide manuscript assessments, developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, mentoring, and ghostwriting. Each project includes a one-hour feedback call to discuss my notes and your next steps.
Do you work with all genres of writing?
I specialise in fiction (literary, commercial, and genre), memoir, and narrative non-fiction. If you’re unsure whether your project is a fit, send me a short outline via the contact form and I’ll advise.
How long does editing a manuscript usually take?
Timelines depend on word count and service:
Manuscript assessment: ~3 weeks
Developmental edit: 6–7 weeks
Line edit: 4–6 weeks
Copy edit: 3–5 weeks
How much does professional editing cost in the UK / US?
Rates vary by service and manuscript length. As a guide to industry standards for an editor with agenting and Big-5 experience:
Manuscript assessment: from £675 / $915
Developmental editing: from £0.045/word (~$0.055/word)
Line editing: from £0.035/word (~$0.045/word)
Copy editing: from £0.025/word (~$0.03/word)
Quotes are always tailored to your project.
Do you work with self-publishing authors as well as those seeking agents?
Yes. I work with both traditionally-minded writers preparing for submission and authors planning to self-publish who want a polished, professional manuscript.
How do I hire an editor?
Start by filling in the contact form. I’ll reply within two working days. If your project looks like a good fit, we’ll arrange a free discovery call.
How do payments work for editing projects?
We accept payments in most major currencies. Large projects are usually split into instalments depending on the length of the project. A 20% deposit is required to lock in a service. All payments use secure methods.
Can an editor guarantee I’ll get published?
No. Be wary of anyone who promises that. What I can guarantee is a professional, thorough service designed to give your manuscript the best chance when it lands with an agent, publisher, or readers.
Can I get feedback just on my first three chapters?
Yes. That’s what a submission package review is for. It includes a line edit of your cover letter, top-line notes on your synopsis, and a detailed read of up to 10,000 words.
Can I request a sample edit before committing?
Yes. I’m happy to provide a free sample edit on up to 1,000 words. This lets you see my approach and ensures we’re a good fit.
